Until my father was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 1979, I never knew anyone who had had cancer, didn't know much about it. He was treated and everything was fine. That is until 2011.
In early 2011 our family was dealt a blow, my brother in law was diagnosed with lung cancer with secondary brain cancer and underwent treatment. No one knew what to do, we were shattered.
Forward to late 2011. A further 3 members of my family were diagnosed. Mum, 81yrs, breast cancer. Aunty, 82yrs, breast cancer. Niece, 24yrs, cervical cancer. To say we were shattered is an understatement. How could this happen? Why us? All the normal questions went through our minds. We pulled together and supported each other and got through it.
Mum had double mastectomy and is now cancer free. Niece had treatment and is also cancer free. Sadly we lost my brother in law and Aunt in Feb and March 2012.
So the question. Why did I join this study? Our story is why. Everyone's story is why. Maybe one day my little part in this study can help make a difference and we will be closer to the successful treatment of cancer.
