Update: ABC Accelerometer Study

The ABC Accelerometer (ACM) Study aims to recruit approximately 4,000 of the 10,000 ABC Study participants who have provided a blood sample. Study participants wear two devices (waist-worn Actigraph® GT3X+ and thigh-worn activPALTM) for 7 consecutive days. Actigraphs are worn during waking hours, while activPALs are worn 24 hours a day.

The ABC Accelerometer (ACM) Study was launched in late 2016.

So far we have invited 5,228 ABC Study participants; 3,468 have consented and were sent devices, and 3,055 have completed the ACM Study data collection.

The ACM Study will initially allow us to validate the self-reported measures of physical behaviour specifically for this cohort, by comparing responses from the questionnaire to the more accurate accelerometer measurements.  In the longer term, the ACM Study will allow us to examine how physical movement behaviours are related to a broad range of health-related outcomes.

Some ABC Study participants who provided a blood sample, will also be asked to participate in this study.   Those selected will receive an email with more information.

Cancer Council Victoria researcher Dr Nga Nguyen presented an abstract titled “Cohort profile: the Australian Breakthrough Cancer (ABC) Accelerometer Sub-Study” as a poster presentation for the 2019 Conference of The International Society for the Measurement of Physical Behaviour (ISMPB) held in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Nga’s presentation described the ACM Study’s protocol, participants and progress to date.
