Welcome to the 2025 ABC Study Newsletter. This year saw the end of the second round of follow-up for the study. Thanks to your generosity we have received over 22,000 poo samples and 15,489 blood samples.
This concludes the collection of biological samples for the time being, but as the ABC Study is a long-term study there may be the opportunity to provide further samples in the future.
In this edition of the ABC Study Newsletter:
-
We share findings from our ABC Gut Microbiome Pilot Study
-
We invite you to express interest in participating in a Community Advisory Group
-
We introduce you to Abbie, our Participant Engagement Coordinator
-
We share the results from the focus group study, featured in last year’s newsletter
-
We invite you to participate in Cancer Council Victoria’s annual Daffodil Day
I’d like to thank you for continuing to make this study the high-quality epidemiological and biological resource it is today. You are helping us build a resource that will prevent cancer and save lives well into the future.
Warm regards, Professor Roger Milne Head, Cancer Epidemiology Division Cancer Council Victoria |

Gut Microbiome Pilot Study Shows Strong Participant Support
In 2019, a small group of ABC Study participants helped test home-based faecal sample collection. The response was excellent, with many returning samples and completing questionnaires.
More than 22,000 participants have since contributed faecal samples, creating one of the largest gut microbiome datasets in the world to support epidemiological cancer research.

What Do People Want to Know About Their Genes?
A recent focus group study revealed that ABC study participants want to receive regular communications from the study team to ensure they remain connected to the research. They also want to be given the choice about whether they receive genetic risk results that might be relevant to them or their family ’s health.

Daffodil Day – Helping Power Research Like the ABC Study
Cancer Council's iconic Daffodil Day is returning on Thursday 21 August and we’re celebrating the vital role cancer research plays, and the role you play in it.
By participating in the ABC Study, you’re contributing to efforts to better understand, prevent and treat cancer. Daffodil Day helps fund this research, making discoveries and progress possible.
There are several ways to get involved - host a fundraising event for your family, friends or workplace, take part in the Daffodil Day dip, or simply donate to give hope this Daffodil Day.
For all that cancer takes, give this Daffodil Day, so we can continue funding lifesaving research into all cancers.
